Upgrading to Ubuntu 15.10 from 15.04

I had a total O/S crash when i tried to upgrade last time. But that was past. I’m going to do it again this time since the screen shots are attractive enough to lure me in. See also the link below for What’s New in Ubuntu 15.10 by Joey-Elijah Sneddon.

Security / Hardening templates from NIST

In service outsourcing / delivery area, often we are being asked “WHAT is your company’s best practice for security?”, “Does your side has any existing guidelines / templates for securing the servers?”

OK, no need to worry. DoD of US has published a number of guidelines in their database. It is categorized into applications, operating systems, web browser etc. You just need to worry that some of these guidelines are not in a human-readable format and probably need some tricks to open using Excel because some are in XML format. Check it out here:

A more elegant way to test port connectivity – netcat command

Most of the time people will ask, “How do I check whether the port has been opened?”. And the answer you will get is most likely to be “Use TELNET!” There’s actually another way of doing it, i.e. using the netcat command. Refer to the tutorial below:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-netcat-to-establish-and-test-tcp-and-udp-connections-on-a-vps

Also, you can refer to the full table of switches that you can use for the nc command below:

nc command can be used in both Windows and Linux/UNIX. For Windows, download the netcat utility here: https://eternallybored.org/misc/netcat/
